Reduce costs to spur take-up of electric cars
IT WAS understandable that the Government, prior to the Copenhagen climate talks next month, announced that Singapore could not take major steps to cut its carbon footprint without hurting the economy.

But we have already taken a number of steps in preparation for climate change, particularly, reclaiming water. And by encouraging the switch to electric vehicles, Singapore could set another example to the world.

Motorists may be encouraged to make the switch if taxes were halved on electric vehicles. At the moment, I would have to pay more for an electric car. In London, drivers of electric cars enter the city without having to pay a fee, and parking at meter bays is free, making the vehicles attractive buys.

Singapore, because of its size and terrain, is ideal as a test city for the electric car. The switch to such vehicles would result in better air quality and less noise pollution.
