Zoo, Night Safari charges reasonable
I REFER to Mr Kamar Lim's letter, 'Zoo, Night Safari to lower their charges' (May 23), Mrs Ng Shien's letter, 'Zoo didn't address high prices, long queues' (May 27) and Mr Steve Tan's letter, 'Drop the adversarial approach, be nice even if you think you're right' (May 29).

As a Singaporean and a mother of one, I am proud that Singapore is working towards having more world-class attractions to be as competent as the big boys. The tourism industry is soaring and, at the same time, inflation is rising. These bring on increasing costs for operators of our local attractions. It is, therefore, impossible for these attractions to reach world-class standards by having stagnant pricing and without increasing their revenue. The entrance fee to Universal Studios in the US alone costs more than US$60 and this is not even inclusive of food and beverages. Hence, it is beyond reasonable doubt that the entrance fees of $16.50 for the Singapore Zoo and $22 for Night Safari are no less than reasonable.

As I would bring my four-year-old daughter to the zoo almost every school holiday season, I am glad that the brains behind the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari are constantly bringing on new ideas and new attractions to replace existing ones. It is unavoidable that the patrons will have to bear with the temporary ongoing renovations and there is nothing to complain about. Demanding a discount on the ticket price is ridiculous and shows the ugly side of Singaporeans.

As for the long queue that Mr Lim and Mrs Ng were complaining about, I wonder if they have been to Hong Kong Disneyland and seen the queue there?
