RECENTLY, I was having dinner at Lau Pa Sat with a friend when an accident happened. A woman in her late 40s, who was holding a tray full of hot drinks and other beverages, bumped into one of the satay store owners who was busy arranging seats.
Unfortunately, I was seated right where the incident happened and the hot drinks rained down my back. I was howling in the middle of Lau Pa Sat, but many people just looked on and continued with their meals. A few people tried appying ice packs and burn cream on my back but that just left me in more pain as some of my skin was already beginning to peel off.
I called the police but was not there to witness the scene as I was already on my way to the hospital. The police gave me a call later to say that there was no case to answer as it was an accident and added that I could claim from my insurance. However, my insurance only covers H&S, so I had to pay my medical bills from my own pocket. So far, the medical bills are not huge but the pain that I had to go through cannot be measured in terms of money.
Will the management of Lau Pa Sat do something to solve the cramped open-air seating arrangements before another accident recurs?
