IN THE wake of China's earthquake, there may be Singaporeans trapped in China waiting for a flight to get out or Singaporeans who have booked tours to visit the country but now have to cancel them. Little inconveniences were inevitable.
Yet, some Singaporeans are behaving badly just because of a flight delay or a long wait at the airport. Some of these people had just returned from Chengdu after a one-day delay at the airport - suffering no physical harm except for a long wait and perhaps a little discomfort. Such complaints make us look ungracious.
I urge Singaporeans to be a little understanding during this trying period. Even if there is a flight delay, be glad that you are still alive. If tour agencies have to cancel your travel plans and you may have to stay in Singapore during the June holidays, at least you still have your families with you and a roof over your head. Please be more understanding if you meet a Chinese national in Singapore who seems to be less attentive because his or her family may be in the heart of that disaster.
Let us demonstrate a little bit of grace and compassion.
