UPON opening a letter over the weekend, I was thrilled and jumping with joy on seeing three cheques payable in my name with amounts of S$200, S$300 and S$1,000.
I was about to get my wife to deposit them into my banking account when I curiously read the beautifully printed card attached. Guess what? It was from UOB. The cover says: 'Ready cash, whenever you need it'. On the inside cover: 'A convenient way to get cash advance & no cash advance fees'.
However, it mentions '3 easy steps' which I have to fulfil: Check my credit limit, choose a preferred cheque amount and deposit into a bank account. All this seems too good to be true until I came across the fine print at the bottom where it was stated that UOB would charge a daily interest of 2% per month the moment the cheque(s) is deposited.
Luckily, I am able to read English. What about those who are illiterate or those who do not have the time to read or not bothered to read at all? It is scary to think of what the bank will offer me next.
