LET'S face it - Singaporeans are by and large a pragmatic and practical bunch of people. To see a marked shift to public transport by private car owners, public transport operators should improve their service.
On Friday, we were on the eastbound train headed towards Pasir Ris when the announcement came on at Eunos station that the train we were on would no longer be in service and that we should vacate the train. No apologies for the inconvenience. A quick time check showed 7.05pm. Then when we were on the platform, another announcement came on, telling us that the train to Pasir Ris will no longer be in service and that we were to wait for the next train. Again, no apologies for any inconvenience caused. Shortly, yet another announcement followed, telling us to board the last train to Pasir Ris on Platform A NOW. Imagine the confusion.
Add to this, the endless reminders telling us not to step over the yellow line. Then came the cruncher - our not-so-friendly SMRT uncle yelling at us to step away from the yellow line. Finally, the 'last' train approached and everyone scrambled to get on board. And while we were all packed like sardines in the train, an announcement came on from outside the train advising commuters to take the next train.
What I take away from this incident is that commuters are given short shrift by the public transport provider. I think we deserve better.
