Salute to the Singapore police force
I REFER to the article, 'Not for export - end of the road for Gurkhas? (April 25). The Singapore Police Force also has a small Gurkha contingent formed in 1949.

Before World War II, there was a small Sikh contingent in Singapore. The Sikh contingent was disbanded after the war.

The first policemen in Singapore were Sikhs and Malays. Ever since Sir Stamford Raffles founded Singapore in 1819, he brought with him Indian sepoys to maintain law and order.

The Gurkhas have played an important role in our society by protecting our vital installations. They were also used to maintain law and order in times of racial riots.

Today we are proud to have a police force that can hold its head high in terms of its training methods and daily policing. Keep up the good work, Singapore Police Force.
