Hawker operators should learn from this chicken rice seller
I AM happy to read yesterday's article, 'Eat for $2 or less - new website tells you where'. In an extremely difficult period of global price rise in almost all food items, it must be good news for many to know that you can get a decent meal for $2 or less in Singapore.

I remember frequenting a coffee shop in Tampines that sells chicken rice (with egg thrown in) for $1.50 a plate. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the price. Many old people, probably retirees, frequent his stall and, by around 1pm, the stall would pack up as all the chicken would have been sold out.

When asked how he could still make money by charging such a low price, the stall owner told me that he depended a lot on regular customers and also from economies of scale. When more people buy his chicken rice, he could spread the cost out and still make a profit.

At a time when stalls keep increasing prices, many stall owners can learn a thing or two from this chicken rice stall owner.
