THE World Book of Encyclopedia has classified Singapore as having a highly developed social welfare system for handicapped children.
The Ministry of Education, National Council of Social Services and the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports are working tirelessly to provide the funding, setting up schools and training teachers, parents and caregivers to cater to the ever-growing needs of children with disabilities, and the time is right to go one step further to build a place to call your own, not only for the kids, but also, just as importantly, for the parents, family members and caregivers. A place where interaction becomes possible. Somewhere to go during weekends and the long school holiday periods.
Let's look at the possibilities of a 'Dreamworld", and how to address the many challenges that will arise in due course. After all, it is always a good time to send a message of love to human-kind and it all starts at home. 'Dreamworld" should have specifications different from our 'Big Splash' and 'Downtown East'. It is also not a hideaway from society or a nursery for the children as they have to be accompanied.
There are also well-established companies, for example, SIA, whose staff enrol in various ECAs and one of them is voluntary social work to give back to humankind and the society. It is very heartwarming to know that more Singaporeans are reaching out and learning the importance of working collectively towards these common causes.
