Let's do justice to Singapore athletes
I REFER to Mr Calvin Ng's letter of April 5.

I fully agree with Mr Ng, we are not doing our local athletes justice. Foreign-born athletes have the advantage of training from a young age compared to our own. They live, eat and breathe sports. Some may also have ulterior motives: If we did not offer prize money would take up citizenship? A few have already made fools of us, so enough of them.

The only foreign-born athlete I really appreciate is table tennis player, Jing Jun Hong. She sank her roots here and married a local boy. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think she took up citizenship before there was any monetary award scheme.

As for sporting glory, we have the talent but the thing is to recognise it. One group of athletes who do not get the recognition due to them is disabled sportsmen and women. They have broken world records too. It's time to give them recognition and monetary awards.

Sports is not just about winning. It is also about building team spirit and perseverance to achieve your personal best. Just give the best you can, even if you do not win, it does not matter. You know you gave your best.
