I HAVE concerns over allowing cyclists the proposed option of cycling on footpaths as there are serious safety implications.
The current practice of allowing bicycles on footpaths poses serious safety risks to pedestrians.
Young children and elderly riders may not be able to control their bicycles or stop in time in an emergency. They can pose significant safety risks to children, babies in prams, the disabled, those who are unwell and the elderly.
Young cyclists may not be able to handle their bicycles or take appropriate action in an emergency.
These cyclists should be allowed only in designated areas like East Coast Park.
Another safety concern is the condition of these bicycles. Many are without lights or with worn brakes and tires.
With worn tires and brakes, how can these cyclists ride safely? Without lights, how will they be visible, especially to the elderly on a dim footpaths?
These are clear breaches of the Rule 11 Road Traffic (Bicycle) Rules which require headlamps showing white light in front and rear red reflectors or red light to be turned on from 7pm to 7am. Non-compliance is widespread.
No amount of assurance the police will not hesitate to book errant cyclists can ensure safety when such non-compliance with the law is widespread.
