Meek Singaporeans and a rude foreigner
I WOULD like to relate an ugly incident that occurred last Friday. I boarded the East-bound train at City Hall Station at around 7pm after work. It was crowded as expected, and getting on was a tight squeeze. The doors were about to shut when a Caucasian man charged in, colliding with the throng of commuters. He apologised.

Before the train could pull away from City Hall station, he started spewing expletives loudly at the commuters on board, commenting on how 'these (expletive) Singaporeans' were completely 'happy with life' and how (expletive) Singaporeans were'. Turning to face the commuters on the platform, he waved to them and remarked condescendingly how (expletive) stupid' those people looked. Singaporeans should smile more, he taunted. I could hear his abuse but was not near enough to confront him. What was more shocking was the utter silence that followed from the commuters around him. Not one person attempted to tell him off, let alone Stand Up for Singapore.

His unbecoming behaviour continued for the duration of his journey, which ended one stop later at Dhoby Ghaut station. As he alighted, he gestured to commuters on the Dhoby Ghaut platform to kick those on the train in order to board, and left expletives in his wake. To that Caucasian who thinks he may have gotten away with his shameful stunt: If this country is not up to your expectations, then leave. As for those Singaporeans in front of him who could have defended our national pride, they could have at least done something. But they chose to remain silent.
