I HAVE to agree with Ms Sarah Sun-Campbell in her letter on Wednesday, 'Help me and my baby, says mother with pram', regarding the dangers posed by cyclists riding on footpaths. In some other countries, this is illegal and for good reason. Clearly pedestrians sharing pavements with cyclists poses a problem.
Recently, my daughter in her pram came inches away from serious harm by a cyclist who almost rode straight into her. It is ridiculous to be walking on a narrow footpath and hear the familiar ding ding of the bell from an impatient cyclist behind. There are signs in all the underpasses listing $1,000 fines for riding there, yet people still ride because the fine is not enforced. There are two issues here: (1) there should be some cycle lanes on roads and (2) if people are worried about injury through riding their bicycles on the road then they should simply buy a helmet. Ms Sun-Campbell raises a good issue and one that should be addressed before someone's baby or small child is seriously injured.
