In-store spraying strictly regulated: Cold Storage
WE THANK Mr Manuel Abundancia Jr for his valuable feedback in his online letter on Monday, 'Pesticide spray at supermarket food shelves'.. We wish to assure him that it is a standard practice by food operators and supermarkets to have pest control measures to ensure the safety and hygiene of the products sold in the premises. This includes the routine pesticide spraying which takes place once a month to keep all stores clean and pest-free.

The in-store spraying is strictly regulated to ensure it is done at a safe distance away from all food. The nozzle of the equipment used is also designed to control the amount and direction of spray. Furthermore, users of the equipment are well-trained to ensure that the spray is directed in a downward position and does not come into contact with any food items. The chemical used is approved by the National Environment Agency for the treatment of small pests and our control measures are in accordance with the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) food safety standards.
