I TRAVEL to Johor Baru once in a while on Saturdays, using the BKE to go to Woodlands, and there's something about the traffic system at the checkpoint which amazes me.
At the end of the BKE, there is a two-lane viaduct leading to the Woodlands Checkpoint. One lane is for cars and the other, motorcycles. After 4pm, this viaduct is 'opened' to motorcycles only (which can be interpreted, I think, as 'cars are advised/not allowed to use this viaduct').
Many a time, I experienced the following when using this viaduct before 4pm:
1. Cars using the motorcycle lane to cut the queue and some 'good samaritans' giving way to them and leaving obedient drivers in the queue frustrated, especially if it's a long queue.
2. Motorcycles going into the car lane to cut the queue and then go back into the motorcycle lane leading to the checkpoint, thus obstructing the cars from proceeding forward.
Can I suggest the following measures to solve this problem?
1. Erect a pole in the middle of the motorcycle lane so that no car can use this lane to cut the queue.
2. Install some form of barrier between the two lanes so that no motorcycle can use the car lane to cut the queue.
I also noticed the following occurrence at this viaduct after 4pm.
Motorcycles travelling on both lanes and a massive jam normally occurs because the motorcycles on the car lane have to go back to the motorcycle lane leading to the checkpoint since there is no 'extra' lane for them to use after 4pm.
Thus, I cannot understand the rationale of allowing only motorcycles on this viaduct after 4pm (at the expense of cars) and yet they still have to use the same lane leading to the checkpoint, resulting in the said jam.
The suggested measures mentioned above will not be possible if motorcycles are allowed to continue using both lanes of the viaduct after 4pm.
I hope the relevant authorities will look into these problems.
