Double yellow lines to indicate 'no parking' - cheaper alternative available
I REFER to the letter, 'Conservancy Charges: Is HDB giving value for money collected?' (ST, Feb 12).

To prevent or at least prolong the need to increase fees which invariably will burden HDB dwellers and heartland businessmen, I suggest that HDB look into and review some of its archaic practices.

One of them which has been bothering me all these years is its practice of drawing lines along access roads to car parks.

It appears that HDB likes to draw double yellow lines on both sides of the road instead of a single continuous white line in the middle of the road to indicate 'No parking' on both sides.

Unless economies of scales are for drawing more lines, the obvious cheaper option is for the single continuous white line.

As a layman, I would think that using the continuous double yellow lines would cost four times more. It will, therefore, save HDB thousands of dollars a year, considering the large number of car parks HDB is managing.

I am concerned that if such practices are not looked into and reviewed, raising of parking charges will be next on the drawing board as the costs of materials and labour are increasing not only in Singapore but also globally.

Contractors tendering for repainting works will definitely increase their tender bids. HDB will definitely not absorb the increase cost for long.
