I WAS pleasantly surprised when MediaCorp Ch5 decided to broadcast the Australian Open Tennis Finals live.
I am not a subscriber to the Sports Group of channels on cable television, so I was looking forward to watching a great match.
The men's finals broadcast started at 4.30pm on Sunday. It was an enthralling match with two very good players battling it out for sporting glory.
However, to my dismay, one-liner supers indicating that X-Men 2 was coming on soon were shown at about 6.30pm. This meant that the live feed would be cut. This was disappointing enough but, more infuriatingly, the transmission break happened at the set point decider for the third set. No apology was made.
A grand slam tennis men's final usually lasts beyond two and a half hours. This is clearly bad judgment and planning on behalf of MediaCorp. If it was clearly impossible for the station to handle such contingencies, then it should not have embarked on such a task. There is really no point showing a live match and cancelling the broadcast midway.
