ON JAN 16, I went to Mustafa's with my seven months pregnant wife to purchase some items and a couple of phone cards. As my wife was too tired to walk, she was seated at the cafe located right alongside Mustafa's.
I finished my purchase close to 6pm and went down to see my wife and was told by her that I had apparently bought the wrong type of phone cards. I then proceeded to go back to the same cashier on the second floor to exchange the cards.
The cards to be exchanged with were also priced at $6.90 each, the same price as the cards I had mistakenly bought.
Upon reaching there, I was instructed to go to the Mustafa SingPost counter at Basement 2 to make the exchange.
I did so but did not notice anyone at the counter except a sign stating the person there would be back at 6.45pm. It was then about 6.10pm.
Not wanting to wait half an hour for a simple exchange, I enquired with the cashier located opposite the counter if she could assist but she insisted I had to wait till 6.45pm for assistance. I was now quite upset and asked to see a manager but was told there were no managers on duty.
I then asked for the location of the Mustafa Administration office to seek assistance and was directed to go to another building adjoining Mustafa's. I did so and proceeded to the HR office. Upon reaching there, I explained my predicament to them and was told that there was nothing that they could do as all the managers had left at 6pm and there was no one of authority on duty. I was asked to write down my particulars on a piece of paper for someone to contact me. I do not understand how that could have helped me at that particular moment. I refused and left to go back to Basement 2.
Very upset by now, I went back and approached the same cashier I had spoken to earlier to attempt to call the person manning the SingPost counter to please cut short his break and help me. She did so and I waited another 10 minutes and that person never showed up but another staff by the name of Arafat finally approached and managed to help me. It was close to 7pm when I finally left Mustafa with my pregnant wife.
My question to Mustafa is why does it take close to one hour just to do a simple exchange and why is there no person of authority on duty to handle and manage any situations that are bound to occur in an establishment as big as Mustafa's after 6pm, As Mustafa's is open 24 hours a day, the need for round-the-clock supervision seems even more pertinent. Mustafa's seems to have abundant sales staff at every turn of the corner but that there was not one staff member to handle an after-sales service issue such as the one encountered by me in a prompt manner.
