I REFER to the letter, 'Problem of abandoned bicycles at MRT stations needs radical and long-term solution' by Mr Lee Seck Kay (Online Forum, Dec 21).
We take a firm stand with regard to our policy on abandoned bicycles. Our station staff conduct regular inspections of station premises to identify abandoned or illegally parked bicycles. Contrary to what Mr Lee suggested, we do remove bicycles left in our premises for more than 72 hours. Last year, we removed a total of 398 bicycles from our MRT stations.
With reference to bicycles parked in the vicinity of Admiralty MRT Station, we wish to share that while our station staff do their utmost to prevent cases of abandoned bicycles, there are areas around Admiralty MRT Station that are not within our boundary. These areas include bus bays and pedestrian walkways. Nevertheless, we are working with Sembawang GRC to identify a suitable location for a bicycle bay to cater to the needs of the residents in the area.
We hope this clarifies the matter and thank Mr Lee for his feedback.
