I REFER to the article, 'Lessons from a nurse, a group of neighbours and Singaporeans in Africa' (ST, Dec 28).
I agree with writer Goh Chin Lian that Singaporeans are a pampered lot who would rather stay in the comfort of their home than venture abroad for new experiences.
Some may even have rejected lucrative pay packages just to stay behind in their comfort zone. This does not augur well for the local workforce's well-being and advancement.
As our economy advances, our workforce suffers from a lack of regional exposure. As foreign workers continue to pour in droves to find work at our doorstep, we have so far resisted any postings abroad. These foreign talents will gain immense regional exposure which will put our local workforce to shame. As they continue to challenge our local workers for jobs, we will continue to lose out both in terms of overseas experience and adaptability.
A human resource manager once told me that they are always impressed with foreigners who have much international exposure. They can be deployed anywhere in the world and tend to adapt readily to different working environments. Their ability to travel has put them much ahead of the employability curve. Singaporeans, in the long run, will lose out to their much hungrier foreign counterparts.
Many Singaporeans, I feel, are satisfied with a small salary and holed up in their HDB flat to while away their life in front of the television and their laptop. They suffer from a state of routine monotony which they fail to overcome in their lifetime. Many sail through life uneventfully and could not say that they have lived life to the fullest. Their life lacks different experiences and cultural exposure.
Any overseas posting is a worthwhile experience regardless of the length and salary that comes with it. It is not the income but the invaluable experience which many will remember for the rest of their life.
For me, I am cherishing my experience in the work here in China.
