I READ with interest the many forum letters written regarding taxi drivers.
Let me point out a few manoeuvres of taxi drivers that irk Singaporean drivers.
1. Taxi drivers switching lanes recklessly.
Often, cabbies change lanes without bothering to watch out for traffic. Sometimes, you have to jam on the brakes to avoid an accident when this happens, and if you happen to sound the horn to show your irritation, they will respond by showing you the middle finger or hurling Hokkien expletives at you.
2. Stopping recklessly to pick up passengers.
Another inconsiderate act of taxi drivers is to change lanes abruptly to pick up passengers at the kerb side. Motorists have to swerve and take evasive action, and this in turn may cause road accidents.
3. Sounding the horn unnecessarily.
Taxi drivers seem to be the most impatient lot of drivers on Singapore roads. Just a couple of days ago, while waiting for pedestrians to cross the road at Bugis Junction, a white taxi behind me kept sounding the horn repeatedly, presumably to get me to move.
Is there any way that motorists can file complaints against errant taxi drivers?
Do they have to go for tests when renewing their vocational licence?
