I WENT the OG department store nursing room last weekend, trying to breastfeed my baby.
While it was thoughtful of the store to have a nursing room, however, it turned out to be more of a diaper-changing room.
Tucked in a corner (with no doors) and with signs clearly stating 'nursing room', I would expect to see at least a cubicle with doors, if not curtains.
However, upon entering, I realised that there were just two chairs in one corner with two diaper-changing facilities in front (all within the same area).
I have used many nursing rooms in Singapore and must really say that this is the most 'unique' among all.
This setup would mean that there is no privacy for nursing mums as (1) there are no curtains or any kind of partition that enables mums to nurse in privacy and, (2), anyone can just walk into the so-called 'nursing room' to change baby diapers as they are all located within the same space.
As I am heartened to see more shopping malls equipped with nursing rooms and diaper-changing rooms, let's not mix up both facilities as they are not the same.
As a loyal customer of the department store as well as a nursing mum, I would sincerely urge the store to try and fine-tune the 'nursing room' setup.
In any case, if any form of partition is not possible, maybe the sign 'nursing room' should be changed to 'baby changing room' so as not to mislead nursing mums.
