Let's support movies produced by local talents
I HAVE watched the local movie - 881 - and was pleasantly surprised to say that I enjoyed it thoroughly though I do not completely understand the Hokkein language used.

Initially, I did not really think that it will be that great a movie as there are other foreign movies such as Rush Hour 3 and Harry Potter jostling for my attention.

Nevertheless, the local production completely justified the movie ticket price and even prompted me to write this letter.

Being a long time fan of both local directors Mr Jack Neo and Mr Eric Khoo, Mr Royston Tan's production came as a new fresh addition to the local movie scene. I dare to predict that given time, Mr Tan may even surpass the two mentioned veterans in terms of artistry and directorship. He is that good.

His usage of imagery, especially towards the end when one of the two Papaya sisters - Little Papaya - died, was also very well staged. I could see that many aunties and uncles sitting around me were silently wiping away tears when the scene was played out. I could feel lumps in my throat and I controlled myself from getting too emotional. After the show, that particular scene kept playing in my mind.

I think Singaporeans have always felt that our local directors could not hold themselves well as compared to Hollywood or Hong Kong productions. Nevertheless, time and again, local directors like Mr Neo, Mr Khoo and Mr Tan Pin Pin have done us proud by producing top-class movies which sometimes even won international acclamation.

It is time that we Singaporeans support and enjoy the movies produced by our local talents.
