OSCAR'S is going down. No, I'm not referring to a fish or a gay poet.
Oscar's is a quaint little food court situated at Anchor Point Shopping Centre, opposite the Queensway Ikea.
Housed in a separate 'wing' from the rest of the shops, its castle-like architecture immediately catches the eye. Inside, colourful decor adorns the ceiling and air-con vents, artfully complementing a cheery ambience.
However, it is the stall counters which always draw my interest. These feature beautiful monochromes of historic buildings and events, accompanied by brief captions.
Besides their obvious national education potential, the pictures give you that classic 'walk down memory lane' feeling as you struggle to choose between yong tau foo and chicken murtabak.
Sadly, Oscar's has been slated for renovation, along with much of Anchor Point. Its current location will likely be taken by restaurants, while the food court moves to the basement. Claiming that the renovations have disrupted business, some stallholders have already moved out.
We could live without another branch of an upmarket restaurant chain. But every food court and hawker centre has its own distinctive atmosphere that makes it a unique experience. Nowhere else will you find that same eclectic combination of stalls and recipes - they will be sorely missed.
What a shame that the Oscar's I know will soon be joining the ranks of its black-and-white photographs.
