I AM disappointed with the decision to cancel the Olympic Distance race for Osim 2007.
All the time, effort and money went down the drain with just a call to cancel the event.
This is my feel for the event. It all went well till it started to rain. The event was held back and left participants in a lurch.
No proper announcement was made that the event would be on hold till the rain subsided. Most of us were lost, as we did not know what was going on.
Most of us heard through other participants, and nothing was concrete.
By around 11.45am, announcements were made to cancel the event. Everyone was quite perturbed by the decision made.
The rain subsided and the weather seemed fine to carry on the race. The silliest we heard from the organisers was that they would reroute/modify the race to a 400m beach run, a 20km bike segment and followed by a 5km run.
The organiser had cited that due to certain risks involved, they would not carry on with the event.
So are the organisers saying that by having a modified race, the risks involved would have been eliminated?
What's the difference between a modified race and the full race, since the organisers decided that they would run the modified one?
Since you are already taking risks to carry on with the modified version, you might as well carry on with the original event.
If the organiser cannot stomach risks, please refrain from holding such events in future. They are wasting participants' time, effort and money.
It came out in the papers on July 30 that the cancellation was due to the buoy line setup, which went partially out of place and it was dangerous to carry on the race as participants might 'sway away' as there was no proper demarcation. This was clearly a logistical problem.
Another point to note: It wasn't raining very heavily, so that shows how badly the buoy lines were laid. The organisers should not have blamed the rain but should admit that they have overlooked or have not planned for contingencies.
Even if buoy lines were to be partially damaged, shouldn't it be proper to sort them out or get them fixed rather than cancelling the race?
Participants should not be penalised for this. I will like to request a full refund on this matter and a formal reply.
