Phra Kru Ba Neua Chai was given an ankus (a hook used to handle elephants) and a horsewhip when he was a baby. An astrologer told his father that his son was not a normal baby and that he needed to have an elephant and a hourse as his guardians. The abbott's body is tattooed with scriptures, signifying his life-long committment to spreading the Dharma. -- ST PHOTO: CHEW SENG KIM

Hundreds of horses now live in the monastery. They are offerings by merit-makers. The abbott not only saves them from the slaughter house, he also uses them to take him to neighbouring villages, and to teach his novice monks about the virtues of care and loyalty. -- ST PHOTO: CHEW SENG KIM
