FAMILY-OWNED business, the Jay Gee Melwani Group, sticks together during tough times. JayGee is a privately held group of companies that represents and markets top international retail labels like Adidas Kids, Aigner, ALDO, Dockers, Liz Claiborne, Levi's and Mexx.

Based in Singapore, JayGee was established in 1883 when Jhamatmall Gurbamall (JG) Melwani left Penang, Malaysia, in search of a better life. With only a case of leather slippers, he set sail for Medan, Sumatra.

He invested the money he made from selling the slippers in more goods and after two years set up his first shop; he was only 27. By 1890, offices were established in Singapore, Yokohama, Calcutta and Padang.

The company has continued to be run by the family, and in 1964, the landmark distribution deal with Levis Strauss & Co, for South-East Asia was signed. Now based in Singapore, the group has built its presence across South Asia and South East Asia through several strategic ventures and associates.

The big secret behind our success is simple - a dash of innovation, commitment to quality, dedicated service with integrity and an uncompromising belief in fine business ethics and culture.

Over the 100 years or so that we've been in business, JayGee has endured a number of economic recessions and downturns. Each challenge was unique in its own way, though reduced consumer spending with rising business costs are common challenges in every recession.

However here at JayGee we have learnt to be realistic in our expectations and also realise that a company needs to be prepared for tougher times.

During the current economic downturn, we've noticed that people are being more cautious in their shopping habits.

The high cost of business these days has also made it harder. We continue to work closely with all our business partners to ensure we all come out on top during these tough times.
