With song, dance and candles, more than 7,000 union members and their families and friends gathered at the Promontory@Marina Bay on Monday to mark Singapore's 45th National Day.
Organised by Young NTUC, the National Trades Union Congress' youth wing, the event was the single biggest gathering in the Marina Bay area and the first such celebration at the Promontory.
At 6.35pm, when President SR Nathan arrived at the Padang for the parade, a 22m-wide Singapore flag was lowered from the 11th to the 7th floor of NTUC Centre, which is next to the Promontory.
At 8pm, the participants lit candles to symbolise the labour movement's pledge to play a part in shaping Singapore's future. They later joined in as the 26,500 people at the Padang recited the Pledge and sang the National Anthem.
