06 August 2010, Fri |
WASHINGTON - THE United States has congratulated Singaporeans everywhere on the occasion of their country's 45th year of independence.
'On behalf of President (Barack) Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Singapore on your 45th National Day,' Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement yesterday.
'On this occasion, we honour the bonds of friendship between our two nations and reflect on all that Singapore has accomplished.'
At the Asean Regional Forum in Hanoi last month, Mrs Clinton affirmed the US' commitment to being an 'active partner' in South-east Asia. She said in her statement yesterday that the US 'values our close relationship with Singapore as a cornerstone of security and prosperity in the region and beyond'.
'We look forward to working together to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of the 21st century,' she said.
She also wished all Singaporeans 'a joyful celebration' on National Day on Aug 9, 'whether you fly your country's flag at home or abroad'.
