AN EXTRAVAGANZA of colours influenced by everything from Singapore's myriad of cultures to science fiction and the European Middle Ages - that is what this year's National Day Parade promises.
And costume director and fashion designer Frederick Lee, 36, known for his flamboyant sense of style, is confident that his brightly-coloured birds, court jesters and even Chinese warriors will not disappoint.
They have all found a place in 'Celebrating the Singapore Spirit' - the theme for this year's celebrations.
The costumes are not just bright, but also have other unusual touches.
The toga-like outerwear of the Silat performers is made of wooden coasters while the armour of the Chinese warriors came from car seat backing.
The blue, green and bandung-pink hues reminiscent of Peranakan tiles also found their way onto the costumes.
Mr Lee, who is doing the show for the first time, produced more than 1,000 drafts over five months for the costumes.
Eventually, 30 designs were picked for close to 5,000 people who will perform on August 9.
Mr Lee is sure that they will not disappoint.
'It will have an international appeal, yet with that Singapore touch,' he said.
