LONDON - BRITAIN'S Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Tuesday sent China his best wishes for the Lunar New Year, predicting that the forthcoming 12 months will be 'momentous' for the country.
'I am delighted to have this opportunity to send you my warmest wishes for the Chinese New Year,' he wrote on his governing Labour Party's website as millions of people began the getaway for the country's most important holiday.
'The Year of the Rat will be a momentous one for China. Your country will host the Olympic games in August. I hope these Olympics will be the best ever, and I am proud that you will pass the Olympic torch to us as the Games close.'
Mr Brown, who made a two-day visit to Beijing and Shanghai earlier this month, said he believed 2008 would also be 'auspicious' for growing links between Britain and China.
Economic and cultural ties would grow, he said, while extending similar sentiments towards Hong Kong and thanking the contribution of Chinese communities in Britain.
