MELBOURNE - DEFENDER Craig Moore announced his international retirement after Australia's 3-0 World Cup qualifier romp over Qatar here on Wednesday.
The former Newcastle United defender, who has played for more than a decade for his country and been a mainstay of two World Cup campaigns, told teammates after the match he would not be with them for the rest of the 2010 World Cup qualifying.
Moore, 32, played his 39th game for the Socceroos and was rock-solid in the middle of the defence with West Ham United's Lucas Neill.
Moore, who now plays for Queensland Roar in Australia's A-League, starred in the Socceroos' 2006 World Cup finals campaign in Germany.
He scored a penalty in the 2-2 draw with Croatia in Germany which helped Australia advance to the round of 16 for the first time where they lost to a disputed last-minute penalty to eventual champions Italy.
'That will be the last time for me. It was a great way to finish it off,' Moore said. 'A job well done and I'm really pleased with the career I've had with the national side. It's always a sad time finishing up but I want to go out on my own terms.' -- AFP
