Geylang Serai network for ex-grassroots leaders
By Keith Lin
GRASSROOTS leaders who make way for young blood in the Geylang Serai constituency do not disappear quietly into the night.

Instead, they are invited to sit on a seniors-only working committee, which the ward has introduced to tap on the skills and experience they have built up over the years.

Called the Grassroots Resource Network, the committee is also roping in retirees who were say, former teachers or event organisers.

It has grown to 24 members since it was formed in February.

Announcing the initiative on Monday, the ward's MP, Ms Fatimah Lateef, said it promote active aging, adding to the national effort.

Madam Lim Ai Choo, for one, is looking forward to being on the committee. The 68-year-old is vice-chairman of Geylang Serai Community Club's Women's Executive Committee, but plans to step down soon.

'I hope to help organise events, like health talks, as often as I can,' said the former nurse. 'It's good to keep yourself occupied even when you?re retired.'
