SINGAPORE and Egypt have signed a cultural cooperation pact to collaborate in the areas of arts, heritage, library and film.
The agreement, inked by Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo and his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Cairo on Wednesday, will open to collaboration in new areas such as the protection and preservation of archaeology, research and restoration of cultural heritage.
Mr Yeo and Mr Aboul Gheit both had a 'frank and free-flowing discussion' on regional developments in Asia and the Middle East on Wednesday, said a Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, Mr Yeo called on Arab League Secretary General Amre Moussa, who briefed him on developments in the Arab League following the recent Damascus Summit.
Both leaders also agreed that there was room for developing stronger ties between Asean and the Arab League.
Mr Yeo also met Singaporean student leaders studying at the Al Azhar University over lunch. He encouraged the students to excel in their studies and keep in touch with developments in Singapore.
Mr Yeo is scheduled to call on Egyptian Finance Minister Youssef Boustros Ghali and Grand Imam of Al Azhar Sheikh Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi on Thursday.
