FROM saving the lives of children with kidney failure, to helping the blind see again and preventing mental patients from going insane - Singapore doctors have racked up remarkable achievements over the last three decades.

On Wednesday, some of the country's top medical minds were honoured for their work at the first National Medical Excellence Awards Ceremony.

No. 8384051 - Professor Yap Hui Kim bags an award for her pioneering research into childhood kidney diseases. Her work has helped save thousands of children who once faced almost certain death from kidney failure.

No. 8424950 - Professor Soo Khee Chee, who helped found the National Cancer Centre, is recognised for his cutting edge research into cancer and for being an exceptional mentor, encouraging younger doctors to stay in public service and do research.

No. 8426237 - Professor Donald Tan is honoured for his work in perfecting cornea transplants, surgery that has given patients with fading vision new hope.
