TAIWANESE dancing diva Jolin Tsai has been heating up the charts here with the song Alone from her new album Agent J. What you might not realise is that a Singaporean penned the tune.

It is one of the many hits that Eric Ng, 31, has chalked up over 10 years in the industry.

He also happens to be the man who executive produced and contributed two tracks to the soundtrack for film-maker Royston Tan's getai film 881 in 2007.

Ng is just one of 10 or so home-grown songwriters making waves on the regional Chinese pop-music scene.

Over the past 15 years, Singapore songwriters such as Billy Koh, Paul Lee Wai Shiong, his twin brother Peter Lee Shih Shiong and Xiaohan have all become well-known names in the industry.

Superstars such as Jacky Cheung, Sammi Cheng, Wakin Chau and Sandy Lam from Hong Kong, Taiwan's Tarcy Su as well as Malaysia's Fish Leong have relied on these tunesmiths for smash hits.
