One-stop network to help firms access technology transfer

COMPANIES looking to get into the hi-tech business now have a one-stop shop where they have access to a buffet of technology choices.

The Agency for Science Technology and Research, together with six tertiary institutions, including the Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Polytechnic, on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding to set up the Technology Transfer Network (TTN) to bridge the gap between research bodies and corporations.

The trend now is for companies to outsource their research and development, noted guest-of-honour A*Star chairman Lim Chuan Poh.

Likewise, industries are looking to universities and research institutions for innovation and technologies, he added.

'With the formation of TTN, the stage is set for sharing of expertise and experience between research institutes here and beyond,' said Mr Lim.

Small and medium-sized enterprises will stand to benefit greatly from the network's establishment, said Mr Lim.

For example, a digital media start-up wishing to adopt hi-tech radio frequency identification (RFID) has the tedious task of shopping around from over 10 institutes here, explained TTN secretariat head Walter Lee.

'TTN lays out the available technology for them, as well as provides companies with the support they need to adopt appropriate technologies,' said Mr Lee.

SMEs like D-Simlab Technologies welcomed the formation of the network.

'Resources and research funding are always huge obstacles to small companies,' said chief executive officer and founder Peter Lendermann. 'Support from such a group is always welcome.'
