AFTER winning an award for her achievements in minimally invasive surgery for two years running, a Singaporean surgeon now has the accolade named after her.

Dr Susan Lim, 52, who runs her own practice in Gleneagles and Mount Elizabeth hospitals, won the award given by the American Academy of Continuing Medical Education in 2006 and 2007.

The academy decided to honour her by christening this year's prize, which is in its 28th year, as the Dr Susan Lim Award for Advancement in Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery.

This is the first time the academy - which sets standards for training courses for doctors and accredits medical training bodies - has named an award after a doctor.

The academy wanted to 'endorse her advanced qualifications and recognise her international achievement', said Dr Andrew Nashashibi, chairman of the academy's international board.

'Through this, we hope to inspire future generations of doctors to follow Dr Lim's relentless pursuits and commitment to support the initiatives of continuing medical education,' he added.

Said Dr Lim: 'I was very excited that they chose me, a Singapore doctor. It helps to plug Singapore's efforts of being a centre of global excellence in health care. It shows an acceptance of what I'm doing, and gives me more zest to go on and do bigger things.'

Laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery refers to surgery that is done through a few small incisions in the patient's body, rather than large cuts made in conventional open surgery.

The smaller cuts mean that patients usually experience less pain and recover faster.

Dr Lim, who has been doing minimally invasive surgery since 1990, was among the earliest here to use a robot to carry out such minimally invasive surgery.
