Important to rebut radical views early: Muslim community leaders
By Zakir Hussain
THE easy access to radical views has made it even more urgent for Singaporeans to counter them with greater vigour, Muslim community leaders said on Friday.

Don't sit back and expect just the Islamic religious leaders to deal with such misguided views of Islam, they said in interviews with The Straits Times.

'When Singaporeans hear such views from another person or read them in an e-mail, they should rebut them,' said veteran mosque leader Rahmat Sulaiman.

He was among eight community and religious leaders commenting on the latest arrests of two 26-year-olds for planning acts of terror.

Such views and terror videos are easily found on the Internet as well as in publications from countries in the region, they said.

Their pervasive influence makes it impossible for religious leaders alone to battle them.

Besides, up to 40 per cent of Muslim youth have no formal religious instruction and are therefore, outside our reach, said veteran mosque leader Rhazaly Noentil.
