Stricter safety standards in assessing training risks of athletes
By Yeo Ghim Lay
NATIONAL sports associations (NSAs) in Singapore will soon have to assess the training risks for athletes using a stricter framework aimed at boosting safety standards.

The change follows the deaths of five national dragon boat paddlers in Cambodia last November.

The accident led to a seven-member panel of inquiry being set up last December to probe into the circumstances of their deaths.

The panel expects to complete its work in two months, Mr Teo Ser Luck, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community, Development, Youth and Sports, said in Parliament on Tuesday.

He also announced that as a result of the inquiry, the Singapore Sports Council intends to introduce a more comprehensive risk assessment framework for NSAs.

He was responding to questions on sports safety and insurance from MP Lim Wee Kiak (Sembawang GRC) and Nominated Member of Parliament Jessie Phua.
