Keep your block litter-free, win a loaf of bread & 10 eggs
IN A bid to encourage residents to take ownership of their immediate environment, the South West Community Development Council (CDC) has come up with a 'Litter-free Block' programme.

Residents of winning blocks will be rewarded with a loaf of bread and 10 eggs.

Jointly organised by the CDC, grassroots organisations and the National Environment Agency (South West Regional Office), the competition which will be held once every six months allow residents to vote for the most 'Litter-free Block' in their precinct under the charge of each Residents' Committee.

The initiative was introduced to combat worrying trends of littering and the lower level of concern among those aged below 30 years old towards keeping Singapore clean.

In addition, residents have expressed concern with litter such as cigarette butts and junk mails found at lift landings, void decks and letterbox areas.

'These programmes on the ground help to remind people the need for community ownership to maintain our reputation as a clean and green city,' said Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District.

'If we bin our own rubbish, there will not be a littering problem. 'My Block is Litter-Free!' competition allows residents to identify with the problem and to take ownership to tackle the problem so that they can have a better living environment,' she added.

Aside from the pleasure of living in a clean and pleasant environment, free groceries like a loaf of bread and 10 eggs, orgainsers hope, will also be an encouragement for residents to work together toward a litter-free block.

'One of the ways in which we could address the littering problem is to help them to understand that individual choices and actions do make an impact on our living environment,' added Dr Khor.

A 'Most Constructive Idea Award' will also be given to the resident who comes up with the most innovative and feasible idea to tackle the littering problem.

Anti-littering educational posters and banners will also be placed near commonly littered areas such as letterbox areas and lift lobbies at each HDB block in the precinct.
