OECD favours strong ties with China: chief
BEIJING - OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria on Tuesday called for greater cooperation with China, and even suggested full membership of the organisation, although he insisted talks were not ongoing.

'We do not see the OECD as important, pertinent for the world's development without having China very, very close to us, as a full member perhaps,' Mr Gurria told a press conference.

'It depends on what China wants (...) If they wanted to be a full member, that would be really good,' he added.

The former Mexican minister, now head of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, pointed out a ministerial council meeting in May 2007 had asked for an 'enhanced engagement' with five nations, including China.

Currently, only five countries are negotiating membership of the OECD, including Russia, Chile and Israel, Mr Gurria said, adding that they were expected to join in the next few years. -- AFP
