Filipino nurse jailed for stealing colleague's ATM card
By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent
A FILIPINO nurse was jailed for five weeks on Wednesday for stealing a colleague's ATM card and withdrawing $600 from her account.

Filipina Valdez Ducusin, 30, admitted to stealing Ms Regina Png Yuan Yi's POSB ATM card from a locker room at the Singapore General Hospital on April 30 last year. About two hours later, she withdrew $600 from her account after having earlier memorised the 20-year-old victim's birth date.

A district court heard that after the two women had had dinner at Block 3 College Road at about 6.30pm that day, Filipina saw that her colleague had left her locker cabinet key on the keyhole in the toilet changing room.

She opened Ms Png's locker and went through her wallet in her handbag. She took her ATM card and memorised her birth date on the identity card.

At about 8.15pm, she went to the POSB ATM machine at Block 4 and used Ms Png's birthdate for the PIN number.

She withdrew $600 from the victim's savings account. She then threw the ATM card and receipt into the rubbish bin.

Two days later, Ms Png made a police report that $600 had been illegally withdrawn from her account.

Filipina had also stolen another nurse's ATM card and withdrawn $400 from her account, but she had returned the money to Ms Chan Chiew Hoi.

These two charges were taken into consideration during her sentencing.

Filipina could have been jailed for up to three years or fined or both on each charge.
