A 42-YEAR-OLD Singaporean man was arrested on Thursday for trying to smuggle in forged identity cards by packing them in his underwear.

He was nabbed around 6.35am, while trying to clear immigration at Woodlands Checkpoint.

Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) had received a tip-off that a man would be carrying forged Singapore identity cards and other passes into the country.

He was nabbed around 6.35am, while trying to clear immigration at Woodlands Checkpoint.

When ICA officers searched him, they found a stack of cards bundled together with rubber bands in his underwear, tucked at the crotch.

The bundle of cards consisted of Singapore blue identity cards, assorted work passes, photocopies of bio-data pages of passports issued by China, and Safety Orientation Certificate cards.

The man also revealed that he was promised $200 if he succeeded in smuggling the cards into Singapore.

If found guilty, he can be jailed up to two years or fined or both.

In a separate case, two men were caught for trying to sneak out of Singapore on Wednesday night by hiding in a car boot.

Both were Chinese nationals and claimed that they didn't know each other. They said they'd only met on the very day when they were supposed to sneak out of Singapore.

One of the men was a 26-year-old who's an overstayer, while the other's a 39-year-old illegal immigrant.

Each of them had $1,000 to be smuggled out of Singapore.

The driver of the Malaysian-registered car that they were hiding in was a 22-year-old Malaysian.

He claimed that he was promised RM$200 (S$87.56) for the job, which he agreed to take on, as he was unemployed.

All three are being investigated for immigration offences. The car has also been detained.
