JAKARTA - INDONESIAN authorities have rejected a request by an Indonesian Muslim militant on death row for his role in the 2002 Bali bombings to remarry his ex-wife in prison, an official said on Thursday.
'A few days ago I rejected the lawyers' demand for Amrozi to hold his wedding at the jail,' the head of the Central Java Justice and Human Rights office, Bambang Winahyo, told reporters.
Amrozi, known as the 'smiling assassin', was planning to remarry his first wife, Rahma, in prison on May 12.
'I rejected the demand because it should not have been addressed to me, but to the attorney general,' Mr Wahyono said.
'There will be no wedding for him in jail unless the attorney general's office approves it.'
Mr Amrozi's lawyer said last month that permission to hold the wedding at the jail had been granted by the prison governor.
Amrozi, 46, and two other Indonesian Islamists convicted of plotting the suicide bombings which killed more than 200 people on the resort island are behind bars at the Nusakambangan island jail off southern Java.
They are awaiting execution by firing squad after exhausting their legal appeals. -- AFP
