'I understand that this emergency summit will be convened by the UN secretary-general with the Asian group of countries and in the region and I think that is great progress,' he told reporters.
Citing developments 'in the last few hours', he added that 'Asian countries are being invited by the Burmese government to provide aid and aid workers through these countries into Burma'.
Mr Brown, speaking at his monthly press conference, gave no more details about the Myanmar summit. He had said on Wednesday that he had urged UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon to organise such a summit.
He meanwhile noted that Britain had so far organised four aid flights into Myanmar, adding that although about 30 flights overall reached the country Wednesday, this was not enough.
'We will stop at nothing in trying to pressure the regime into doing what any regime should have done long ago and that is, in the interests of the people of the country... allowing the aid to reach them,' he said. -- AFP
