MY SPACE
A home that shines like a polished gem
Airforce officer John Yong, 31, tells Melody Zaccheus how his designer played with lighting to create a modern look for his executive HDB flat at Admiralty

'MY INITIAL budget for the renovation of my home was about $30,000. But the figure began to balloon and I soon found myself having to fork out an additional $10,000.

The furnishings that we bought to match the design of our home were also a tad costly and came up to $20,000. But despite busting my budget, I couldn't be more pleased with the result.

Family and friends who visit can't help but agree as well, noting that our home is unique, stylish and spacious.

Our designer was crucial to the entire process. She avoided all forms of conventional lighting and opted instead to make use of down lights, chandeliers and corner lighting to brighten up our home.

The entrance, for instance, was fitted with a multi-coloured chandelier that reflects light extremely well. The different hues from the chandelier dance on the walls and ceilings as if to welcome all guests who step into our home.

A similar chandelier hangs over our custom-made dining area and gives it an air of class.

The dining area features a black, L-shaped bench that can easily accommodate more guests. The table was custom-made as well. Our designer used a block of dark patterned wood as the foundation for the table and mounted a glass top onto it.

Mirrors were installed along the walls to brighten up this dark-themed nook.

Whenever we have dinner at this spot, we feel like we're dining in an expensive restaurant.

Another part of the flat that we placed particular emphasis on was our walk-in wardrobe. We wanted it to feel like a boutique, so our designer had it laid out in such a way that whenever we pick out our outfits for the day, we can do so in front of a three-panel wall mirror.

My wife and I had to organise our wedding and the renovation at the same time during the last few months of 2007, so it was quite a strain.

A ton of research, planning and coordination went into the creation of our home. Hence, our apartment is like a gem that we painstakingly polished to perfection over a period of time.'
