THERE was an air of apprehension at Citigroup's Singapore office as staff confronted news that the battered United States bank is axing thousand of workers across the world. Some local staff from the corporate and treasury divisions have already been shown the door - part of the first wave of 4,000 sackings from Citi's global workforce of 375,000.

I REFER to last Tuesday's letter, 'Make it fairer, more transparent' by Mr Wong Weng Fai, and the editorial, 'Power shock: Bring retail competition sooner', on the increase in the electricity tariff.
THE Singapore Seminar is organised by the Public Service Commission for Singapore scholarship holders studying overseas. On Oct 4, it was held in Boston, Massachusetts, for scholarship holders studying in the United States. One discussion touched on Singapore's obsession with all things new - new infrastructure, new buildings, new layout, new packaging. Unlike other countries which have a culture of stretching the value of their assets to the maximum, Singapore prefers to depreciate the value of its assets quickly, so they can be replaced with some other new thing. Aircraft were cited as an example: The planes in the Singapore Airlines fleet are normally replaced after six years of use, way before the end of their expected lifespan.

Mas Selamat: Here's how he escaped
Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng unveiled further details to the daring escape of JI fugitive Mas Selamat Kastari in Parliament on Monday when he released the Executive Summary of the Committee of Inquiry's report. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong gave his take on Government accountability over the issue. We bring you both speeches in full.

The COI's recommendations
The Government has accepted a slew of recommendations put forth by the Committee of Inquiry (COI). Among them - centralising the command and control of the Whitley Road detention centre under the Internal Security Department and building a new detention facility in Changi Prison for political detainees.
