ANWAR SEX SCANDAL
Guard: I saw Anwar enter condo
Anwar: I never denied that
Unit said to belong to Anwar's friend; guards cannot recall Saiful visiting
KUALA LUMPUR - DATUK Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he had never denied visiting a posh condominium where a former personal assistant claimed to have been sexually assaulted.

His remark yesterday came after a security guard there was reported by a newspaper as saying he had seen the opposition leader entering the complex.

'I (have) never said that I have never been there,' Mr Anwar told reporters at his Petaling Jaya office after a meeting.

He would elaborate on the issue later, news website Malaysiakini quoted him as saying.

His former personal assistant, Mr Saiful Bukhari Azlan, filed a police report on Saturday claiming he was sodomised last Thursday at Kondominium Desa Damansara.

Mr Anwar also brushed off a report in a local newspaper which claimed doctors at a hospital where Mr Saiful was treated had found evidence that Mr Saiful had engaged in anal sex.

'Their problem, lah. He (Mr Saiful) has to explain that,' said Mr Anwar, according to Malaysiakini.

In a report yesterday, the pro-Umno New Straits Times (NST) said Mr Anwar was believed to have had access to one of the condo units as it was owned by one of his friends.

A police forensics team spent about five hours in the unit on Monday.

The NST spoke to a security guard at the condominium who said he saw Mr Anwar entering the complex in the upscale Damansara Heights area more than a month ago.

The unnamed guard said Mr Anwar had entered the heavily guarded premises with his driver and bodyguard.

'Yes, I saw him enter once or twice, but this was quite a while ago. He came in a vehicle not commonly available in Malaysia. It had tinted windows,' the guard said.

'I saw who was in the car when they wound down the window to touch the card at the guardhouse to gain entry to the premises,' he was quoted by the NST as saying.

Security guards on the premises, however, could not recall whether they had seen Mr Saiful there.

Security is tight and visitors are not permitted entry without the guards first obtaining permission from the residents, the daily said.

The guards also go on regular patrols around the premises.

Mr Anwar yesterday refused to answer a question about whether Mr Saiful had ever accompanied him overseas, a suggestion that has been making the rounds in Kuala Lumpur.

'There are certain things about which I would have to consult my lawyer first, because investigations are in progress. All I can say is that there is nothing to worry about,' Mr Anwar was quoted as saying.

There were news reports that claimed Mr Saiful had allegedly been sodomised by Mr Anwar overseas, including in Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong, Malaysiakini said.

The de facto opposition chief said he had to answer questions carefully because of what he alleged was an ongoing Barisan Nasional media campaign against the opposition. 'I have to work with my lawyers to deal with this,' said the former deputy premier.

Opposition leaders continued to voice their support for him.

Mr Lim Guan Eng, secretary-general of the Democratic Action Party, said the police must be seen to be impartial in their investigation, otherwise they will 'reinforce the negative public perception that they are an agent of the ruling powers'.

Mr Anwar said the spiritual leader of Parti Islam SeMalaysia, Nik Aziz Nik Mat, had met him yesterday and expressed concern and regret over the fresh sodomy allegations.
