MANCHESTER - BLACKBURN boss Mark Hughes is to hold talks about becoming Manchester City's next manager, after Sven-Goran Eriksson's year-long reign at the club ended yesterday.
Within hours of City confirming Eriksson's departure, Blackburn announced they had 'reluctantly' allowed their manager to talk to City owner Thaksin Shinawatra about the vacancy.
'Mark has made it clear to the board he would like the opportunity to talk to Manchester City,' Blackburn's statement said.
Hughes has won plaudits for twice guiding Blackburn, one of the smallest clubs in the English top flight, into Europe and for fostering an attractive, passing style at Ewood Park.
He has made it clear, however, that he harbours ambitions of moving to a bigger club.
He is tipped for both the current vacancy at Chelsea and the one that will emerge at Manchester United when Alex Ferguson retires some time in the next three years.
'It's my ambition to go as far as my ability will allow me to, just as I did as a player,' the ex-Wales boss said in a recent interview.
'That approach still holds true as a manager. If my ability allows me to go on and progress and get top jobs, then all is well and good. I'm not someone who accepts mediocrity.'
City said the long-anticipated parting with Eriksson had been by 'by mutual consent'.
